Archäologische Berichte: The DGUF monograph series
The Archäologische Berichte is the monographic series of the DGUF. It is released since 1987 with approximately one volume per year. While the publications include papers from within the DGUF, most of the volumes comprise of research books like well-written doctoral theses. The DGUF’s aim in establishing the series was to provide the authors with an opportunity to publish to a large readership while adhering to the quality assurance employed by the academic community in a way that is both fast and cost-effective. To achieve this objective more effectively the Archäologische Berichte is released twofold: in print and, in collaboration with the Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg, online as open access (license CC BY). The monographic series, in the same manner as the DGUF’s journal Archäologische Informationen, incorporates supplementing materials and Open Data wherever necessary since volume 25. Editors are Frank Siegmund (Editor-in-Chief), Werner Schön, Diane Scherzler, and Birgit Gehlen.
Quality assurance and technology
All volumes undergo quality control by means of an anonymous peer review, among other things, before they are accepted for publication. On publication, the volumes are issued with an ISBN number; thanks to an immediate bibliographic recording, they are visible in the national and international library catalogues from the very start. The monographs can be enriched with supplemental materials such as high-resolution maps, oversize formats and photos, and, most importantly, the associated research data (Open Data). Interested individuals can find the necessary details in the editorial guidelines for the series (in German only).
The DGUF’s partner in this project is the same as for the Archäologische Informationen, the DGUF’s specialist journal – namely Heidelberg University Library, which is taking over and guaranteeing the hosting and long-term archiving of the volumes and the data. The software platform here is the widely used open-source software Open Monograph Press (OMP). OMP is rapidly being developed further, however, and DGUF's feedback is being taken into consideration in this process.
Open Data
The data accompanying a publication which the authors have recorded and evaluated can be added to the publication as Open Data. The "HeiDok" data archive, which is operated and guaranteed by the Heidelberg University Library, then makes the data available via a cloud in only one click. Results thus become easier to check and understand, and the further use of the data is also made easier. The editors take care that the data are stored in simple and well-defined formats so that they can be loaded into the relevant software applications again for as long as possible.
Licensing
If the author consents, the volume is published under a CC BY licensing scheme. This follows the recommendation of, among others, the DFG and enhances the range and perception of the works. All authors keep their copyright, while DGUF gets a non-exclusive right of use only.
Reduced costs for the authors
The typesetting is either done by the authors themselves in accordance with the DGUF’s guidelines or is administered by third-party organisations. In the latter case, the DGUF is able to provide guidance. The finished work is published online as Open Access at no further cost for the author and a hard copy can be ordered as print-on-demand.
Web beacons can be used to maintain royalties with the VG word upon the author’s request.
Printed edition
At the same time as the online publication, it is also possible to order the printed volume via service providers such as buchhandel.de or amazon.de with just a few clicks.
Republication of all volumes
Back in 2013, the DGUF started to gradually retro-digitise all older volumes of Archäologische Berichte and to make them available to research in Open Access. Since mid-2017, all Arch. Ber. volumes old and new are available online.
